Ants in Los Angeles: The Argentine Ant Problem

The most common ant in Greater Los Angeles is the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile), an invasive species that has largely displaced native ant species throughout Southern California. Argentine ants behave differently from most ants — they do not form isolated colonies with a single queen but instead form massive supercolonies with multiple queens and millions of workers spanning entire neighborhoods or even entire cities.

This supercolony structure makes Argentine ants extremely difficult to control. When you spray one trail, foragers die but the colony routes around the treated area within hours. The colony itself — with its many queens spread across a vast underground network — is completely unaffected by surface sprays. This is why homeowners in LA often spray the same ant trails repeatedly with no lasting result.

Effective Argentine ant control requires slow-acting bait that foraging workers carry back to the nest and share with queens and larvae. This approach takes days to work but eliminates the colony at its source rather than just killing visible foragers.

Other ant species present in LA include carpenter ants (which nest in wood and can cause structural damage), fire ants (less common, found primarily in foothill and valley areas), and pavement ants. Each species requires a different treatment approach. Read our full guide: How to Get Rid of Ants in Your House.

Our Ant Control Process

Step 1 — Inspection: We identify the ant species present, locate entry points, and find foraging trails. Argentine ants typically enter through cracks in the foundation, around pipes, and under doors. Carpenter ants may be nesting in moisture-damaged wood.

Step 2 — Baiting: For Argentine ants, we apply slow-acting liquid or gel bait along foraging trails and at entry points. Bait transfer is the key — workers carry the slow-acting bait back and feed it to queens, killing the colony from within.

Step 3 — Perimeter Treatment: A non-repellent liquid treatment is applied around the exterior foundation to prevent new foragers from entering. Repellent products are avoided because they cause Argentine ant colonies to 'bud' (split and multiply).

Step 4 — Follow-Up: Argentine ant control typically requires 2–3 treatments over 4–6 weeks to fully suppress a large supercolony. We schedule follow-ups and monitor activity between visits.

Ant Control Cost in Los Angeles (2026)

Professional ant control in Los Angeles costs $150–$400 per treatment visit for an average residential property. Properties with severe infestations or large lots may cost more.

Many clients benefit from including ant control in a general pest control plan — combining quarterly pest service with targeted ant baiting provides ongoing suppression at a lower per-visit cost than standalone treatments.

Carpenter ant treatment may be higher if nest excavation or moisture source repair is involved.

Prices are estimates based on 2026 LA market averages. Actual cost depends on property size, infestation severity, and treatment method.
