Spiders in Los Angeles: Black Widows and Beyond
The Western black widow (Latrodectus hesperus) is the most medically significant spider species in Greater Los Angeles. Black widows are common in undisturbed areas: garages, sheds, wood piles, under decks, in crawl spaces, and in natural areas adjacent to homes. Female black widows are identifiable by the red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. Their venom is a neurotoxin that can cause severe pain, muscle cramps, sweating, and in rare cases (particularly in children and elderly), serious medical complications.
Brown recluse spiders are less common in LA than in the southern and midwestern US but are occasionally found — often transported in boxes or furniture from other states. They have a violin-shaped marking on the back and prefer dark, undisturbed areas.
Common house spiders, cellar spiders ('daddy long legs'), wolf spiders, and jumping spiders are present throughout LA but are not medically significant. Regular exterior treatment as part of a general pest control program effectively controls most house spider species.
Spider pressure in LA increases in late summer and fall when spiders are most active and visible outdoors.
Our Spider Control Process
Step 1 — Inspection: We check garage interiors, crawl spaces, wood piles, and exterior perimeter areas for black widow webs and harborage. Black widow webs are irregular, tangled, and low to the ground — different from the organized webs of garden spiders.
Step 2 — Direct Treatment: Active black widow webs and spiders are treated directly. Egg sacs are also treated to prevent new hatch.
Step 3 — Perimeter Residual Treatment: A residual insecticide is applied along the exterior foundation, garage interiors, and other key areas to create a deterrent zone.
Step 4 — Habitat Reduction Advice: We advise on reducing spider harborage — moving wood piles away from the home, clearing clutter from garages, sealing gaps where spiders can enter.
